Ralph McQuarrie died yesterday.
His pre-production artwork for Star Wars has become iconic, and rightly so, because it probably served to define the look and design of the Star Wars universe more than any other single factor.
As a kid, I would stare lovingly at his paintings in the SF film zines for hours. The above image - which graced the cover of Alan Dean Foster's Splinter Of The Mind's Eye - is a particular favourite of mine.
